City of Tracy Marks Arbor Day Celebration with Tree Planting Event

Posted: Nov 17, 2015
Location: Tracy, Calif.

Tracy, Calif. – The City of Tracy, in partnership with the Tracy Tree Foundation, will host an Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. on Dronero Court in Tracy. During the event, approximately 15 trees will be planted by volunteers and staff. Among those planting the trees will be City of Tracy Councilmembers, Tracy Tree Foundation board members, Parks & Community Services Commissioners, and Youth Advisory Commissioners (YAC).   Staff from the City’s contracted tree service, West Coast Arborist, will be there to assist as needed.

“Arbor Day is a great opportunity to raise awareness and support for an ongoing healthy urban forest in Tracy,” stated Don Scholl, Interim Public Works Director. “Trees provide many health and environmental benefits, all which contribute to the quality of life in our community.”

The Tracy Tree Foundation is a newly formed community organization whose main purpose is to help sustain and improve the local urban forest. The organization strives to educate the community on the value of trees, including their economic, environmental, health, and social impacts. The Foundation currently has nine board members and is pursuing grants to help support Tracy’s Urban Forest.

Following the Arbor Day celebration, the Youth Advisory Commission will host a park clean-up event at Hoyt Park, located at 300 3rd Street. “The Youth Advisory Commission recognizes important issues in our community, one of which is the environment and our preservation of it,” stated Pallavi Adapa, Youth Advisory Commission Chair. “Arbor Day is a day that promotes the planting of trees as a way to make sure we take the time to care for the environment.”

Arbor Day is typically celebrated nationally during the spring; however, any community can designate a different day to celebrate this event.  Tree planting events such as Arbor Day can help position the City in obtaining the Tree City USA designation which can assist in securing future grant opportunities to fund tree improvements.

Residents interested in participating in the Arbor Day event may contact the Public Works Department at (209) 831-6300 for more information.
