Safe and Sane Fireworks Legal in City LimitsPosted: Jun 23, 2015
Location: Tracy, Calif.
Residents of the City of Tracy are reminded that Safe and Sane Fireworks are legal for use within the City limits for the Fourth of July Holiday. California’s definition of a Safe and Sane Firework is one that does not leave the ground and that does not send projectiles into the air. Dangerous fireworks include the following and are not legal in the City of Tracy: firecrackers, torpedoes, sky rockets, missiles, mines, shells, aerial cakes, flying spinners, and roman candles. Possession, sale or discharge of illegal fireworks within the City limits is a misdemeanor.
The Tracy City Council approved an ordinance in 2011 permitting Safe and Sane Fireworks to be sold and used. Proceeds from the sales of Safe and Sane Fireworks benefit several local non-profit organizations that are selected through an annual lottery. After obtaining all necessary permits and completing the required safety training, the selected non-profits are permitted to sell within the City limits.
The following non-profit organizations are permitted to sell Safe and Sane Fireworks at the noted locations:

July 4, 2015 12:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.
Within Tracy City limits, the public is allowed to set off fireworks during the Fourth of July Holiday. However, in the unincorporated areas surrounding Tracy they remain illegal and use is strictly enforced. Safe and Sane Fireworks are prohibited from sale and use within the City limits as of 12:01 a.m. on July 5, 2015.
The Tracy Fire Department has several suggestions for keeping residents safe when using legal fireworks. First, do not let children light fireworks. Additionally, do not let children play with sparklers. Sparklers cause more injuries to children than any other type firework. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt some metals. In 2013, there were an estimated 2,300 emergency department-treated injuries associated with sparklers. Of all the fireworks-related injuries in 2013, 40% were to people under the age of 15.
“We ask that you be extremely responsible in light of the data that indicates that children under 15 are more prone to fireworks-related injuries,” stated Division Chief Patrick Vargas. “We encourage you to use good judgment and keep your children safe during the Fourth of July Holiday.”
In addition, the public should consider the following safety precautions when handling fireworks: keep a water source within 100- feet of the fireworks discharge location, maintain a safe distance between fireworks and onlookers, position fireworks away from dry grass or other flammables, light fireworks one at a time, and never point them in the direction of others.
