City of Tracy Débuts Solar Energy Refuse & Recycling Pilot Program

‘Big Belly’ Compactors Placed on Streets & in Parks

Posted: Jan 29, 2015
Location: Tracy, Calif.

The City of Tracy is announcing a new pilot program aimed at trash and recycling collection using ‘Big Belly’ solar compactors.  The dual refuse and recycling units are connected together and operate off of a solar panel located on the top of the compactor. The City purchased six dual units using CalRecycle funds, which are distributed to cities to help promote recycling efforts. The ‘Big Belly’ containers are being placed along a handful of City streets and parks.

“We’re excited to unveil these high-tech and energy efficient units to the community,” stated Jennifer Cariglio, Public Works Management Analyst. “The outcomes gathered during this pilot period will help the City to determine if the units are of benefit to the community and if additional containers should be sought.”

The ‘Big Belly’ containers come equipped with smart software that has the ability to notify the service provider when they are ready to be emptied. This information will help cut service costs by reducing staff time for checking containers that do not require service. Particular locations within the City have been selected to gather different data during the pilot stage, such as: vandalism resiliency, high use areas, contamination probability, and likelihood of capturing more recyclables.

The Public Works Department has installed the first two of the six dual units purchased. One unit is located on Sycamore Parkway along the walking path just north of Allegheny Street. The second unit is located next to the bus stop on Clover Road in front of Fountain Plaza. The remainder of the units will be installed over the next few weeks.
